Medicare and MBS optimisation

Supporting Aboriginal community controlled health services to use Medicare well

AMSANT’s Medicare and MBS optimisation program helps Aboriginal community-controlled health services (ACCHSs) use the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) in ways that fit local models of care, community priorities and workforce — without adding extra burdens on staff.

What we do

We work with services to strengthen Medicare claiming, improve data quality and embed simple, reliable systems. This includes support to use key MBS items, review claiming patterns, provide practical training, improve digital workflows and develop tools tailored to the NT ACCHS context. We also work with funders and partners to clarify rules and advocate for improvements.

Better use of Medicare means:

  • stronger funding for the care services already provide
  • fewer billing errors and compliance risks
  • less admin pressure on staff
  • more stable, sustainable primary health care for communities

Stronger MBS systems also support community control — keeping resources, jobs and decision-making within Aboriginal organisations.

Who we work with

We support ACCHSs, practice managers, clinic coordinators, clinicians, Aboriginal health practitioners, admin teams and partners involved in Medicare and primary health care funding.
