The Northern Territory Government today released its banned drinkers register review as the latest crime data is released across the Territory.
The Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance of the Northern Territory (AMSANT) welcomed the announcement that the 7-day banned drinker order would be extended to 28 days from next month.
“AMSANT supports the decision to extend banned drinker orders (BDO) to 28 days. Any measure that helps reduce alcohol-related harm and improve community safety and wellbeing is welcome,” AMSANT Chair Rob McPhee said.
“But banning alone won’t fix the underlying issues. To make a real difference, these changes must be paired with real investment in solutions that stop harm before it starts. That means intervening earlier and addressing the root causes of alcohol-related harm in our communities.”
“If the extended BDO powers are to achieve their potential, we need proper resourcing for Aboriginal community controlled health services, who are best placed to deliver culturally safe prevention, treatment and support. Community-led approaches are essential if we want long-term, sustainable change.”
